Colin Banas is an Internal Medicine Hospitalist and the Chief Medical Information Officer for VCU Health System in Richmond, VA. He heads the Office of Clinical Transformation, a unique group of clinicians and support staff who drive innovation and optimization into the application of information technology at the point of care.

Having graduated from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA, Dr. Banas went to work for Virginia Commonwealth University Health in 2002. In 2008, while working as a Hospitalist for the Department of Internal Medicine and as Medical Director for the Department of Care Coordination, Dr. Banas received his Master of Science in Health Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA. He regularly leads students in an online course in medical informatics, and has testified before the U.S. Senate and the Office of the National Coordinator on the topic of Health IT and the Meaningful Use Program and is former Health IT Fellow for the ONC.

His interests center on novel forms of Clinical Decision Support, those that are outside of the realm of traditional rules and alerts, and include real-time dashboarding and intuitive usability designs. He also helped spearhead the VCU effort to participate in the Open Notes initiative, where patients have access to their clinical documentation in real time.
